Trends in bird abundance differ among protected forests but not bird guilds

چکیده

Improved monitoring and associated inferential tools to efficiently identify declining bird populations, particularly of rare or sparsely distributed species, is key informed conservation management across large spatiotemporal regions. We assess abundance trends for 106 species in a network eight forested national parks located within the northeast United States from 2006 2019 using novel hierarchical model. develop multispecies, multiregion, removal-sampling model that shares information enable inference on sampled evaluate effects local forest structure. Trends over time varied widely parks, but showed similar parks. Three (Acadia National Park Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller Morristown Historical Parks [NHP]) decreased all while three (Saratoga NHP Roosevelt-Vanderbilt Weir-Farm Historic Sites) increased abundance. Bird peaked at medium levels basal area high percent regeneration, with having largest effect. Variation these could be result differences structural stage diversity. By sharing both communities our enables uncertainty-quantified estimates multiple geographical (i.e., network, park) taxonomic community, guild, species) region. found variation not guilds, suggesting condition might have broad consistent effect entire community given park. Research should target overall decreasing further what specific factors are driving observed declines community. Understanding how respond structure other stressors (e.g., pest outbreaks, climate change) crucial lasting management.

Bird Communities of Southern Forests

Birds constitute a high-profile group of species that attract a great deal of attention as watchable wildlife. Also, birds are important as indicators of habitat conditions and environmental health. Compared to other groups of animals and plants, birds are relatively conspicuous and can be easily monitored. Available information on bird ecology is substantial, but understanding the management r...

Resilience and stability in bird guilds across tropical countryside.

The consequences of biodiversity decline in intensified agricultural landscapes hinge on surviving biotic assemblages. Maintaining crucial ecosystem processes and services requires resilience to natural and anthropogenic disturbances. However, the resilience and stability of surviving biological communities remain poorly quantified. From a 10-y dataset comprising 2,880 bird censuses across a la...

On the Relative Abundance of Bird Species.

One approach to the study of the structure of animal communities for which there is a considerable amount of raw data is the comparison of abundances of the species of a group of organisms in a given locality. The basic information is a list of species found and the abundance of each. This can best be plotted by ranking the species from commonest to rarest along the abscissa and plotting their ...

Estimating bird abundance: making methods work

In many bird monitoring surveys, no attempt is made to estimate bird densities or abundance. Instead, counts of one form or another are made, and these are assumed to correlate with bird density. Unless complete counts on sample plots are feasible, this approach can easily lead to false conclusions, because detectability of birds varies by species, habitat, observer and many other factors. Tren...
